Research Frontier Memetic Computation - Past, Present & Future

چکیده
From the word "mimeme" of Greek origin, Dawkins coined the term "meme" in his 1976 book on "The Selfish Gene" [1]. He defined it as being "the basic unit of cultural transmission or imitation". These days, the monosyllabic word "meme" that is an analog of the word "gene" has since taken flight to become one of the most successful metaphorical ideologies in computational intelligence. The new science of memetics today represents the mind-universe analog to genetics in cultural evolution, stretching across the fields of anthropology, biology, cognition, psychology, sociology and sociobiology.

Memes as building blocks: a case study on evolutionary optimization + transfer learning for routing problems
A significantly under-explored area of evolutionary optimization in the literature is the study of optimization methodologies that can evolve along with the problems solved. Particularly, present evolutionary optimization approaches generally start their search from scratch or the ground-zero state of knowledge, independent of how similar the given new problem of interest is to those optimized ...
متن کاملMemetic algorithms applied to the optimization of workflow compositions
The selection of services of a workflow based on Quality of Service (QoS) attributes is an important issue in service-oriented systems. QoS attributes allow for a better selection process based on non-functional quality criteria such as reliability, availability, and response time. Past research has mostly addressed this problem with optimal methods such as linear programming approaches. Given ...

متن کاملA memetic algorithm for University Course Timetabling
We present here a metaheuristic approach to the university course timetabling problem using a memetic algorithm with a very effective local search. The algorithm was tested on the International Timetabling Competition benchmark instances. Results are encouraging and show that evolutionary computation with the help of local search can compete with succesful algorithms on the problem.
متن کاملDetection of Buried Inhomogeneous Elliptic Cylinders by a Memetic Algorithm
The application of a global optimization procedure to the detection of buried inhomogeneities is studied in the present paper. The object inhomogeneities are schematized as multilayer infinite dielectric cylinders with elliptic cross sections. An efficient recursive analytical procedure is used for the forward scattering computation. A functional is constructed in which the field is expressed i...
